Food Institute is one of the long-established institutions of TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM). Firstly it was established with the name of “Nutrition and Food Technologies Unit” in 1971; and after TÜBİTAK MAM was formed in Gebze in 1972, the unit moved to Gebze in 1973.
The vision of the Food Institute is to become one of the leading science and technology centers of the world in the field of applied research. In line with national development goals, the institute has adopted the mission of developing knowledge, technology and products that help improve the food industry technologically, boost the competitive power, reduce foreign-source dependency, ensure food safety and eliminate nutrition problems.
The machinery and equipment inventory of the institute is quite extensive to allow a wide range of research activities in the field of food. The institute’s projects focus on the themes of ‘food processing technologies’, ‘food packaging and preservation’, nutrition and functional foods’ and ‘food safety and quality’. Although most of the researchers’ area of specialization is food engineering; the institute also has researchers in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, veterinary medicine, agriculture engineering, mechanical engineering and physics.
